Theresa May's £2b for social housing

Theresa May's recent announcement regarding two billion pounds she is going to put into social housing fell short to a lot of people's expectations. A quote from The Guardian states "The pre-publicity for Theresa May's speech to Tory conference sought to portray her as the first Tory prime minister since Harold Macmillan to announce a major social housing building building programme." However, many people jumped to speak out against the controversial Tory leader's move. Many stating that to beat the crisis the government would need to build 250,000 houses a year but the two billion May had promised will only build five thousand. Alongside this, many council's such as Southwark have stated that "The national pot would barely even cover Southwark's housing needs" which has also created another side of backlash towards the prime minister and the Chancellor. This is shown by Southwark Council's finance boss stating that the authority plans to spend £1.3 billion instead of the government's allowed £1 billion.
